Splurge vs. Save – Makeup Edition

Splurge vs. Save – Makeup Edition

I’ll be doing a lot of Splurge vs. Save posts, and I thought I’d start with makeup/skincare since it can be very expensive to look good these days! These are the products that I use or that my friends swear by, and if you have any go-to products that you can’t live without, I’d love to hear about them in the comments section below! This is what this blog is all about, sharing the love!

1. Mascara SAVE

I am going to give my sister-in-law Jen and my amazing friend Julie credit for this one. They both have amazing lashes and I needed to know what type of mascara they used to get such great length and thickness (other than being genetically blessed). Turns out they both really like inexpensive mascaras from the drug store, and the trick is to layer it on (a good 3-4 layers is key). Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal and Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies are my go-to mascaras these days, They cost under $10 and I ALWAYS find them on sale! The first mascara (yellow) lengthens and defines, and the second one (purple) curls and thickens. It’s a match made in heaven!

2. Primer SAVE

I used to swear by the Smashbox Primer (which, don’t get me wrong, is amazing) but I went through that tube so fast and with a price tag of $44, I decided to look for something just as good but with a lower price. So I am now using Sephora’s Perfecting Ultra-Smoothing Primer, which gives me the same results but for half the price ($19)!

3. Moisturizer SAVE

I have been using the same moisturizer since I was in high school (trust me, that’s a long time!) and I have no intention of switching, especially since it only costs $11 and one tube lasts me at least 2 months. I have dry skin in the winter and one thin layer of this cream is all I need. It’s great for sensitive skin, it has a very mild smell and it doesn’t make your face oily. I usually purchase mine at Shoppers Drug Mart (it’s not sold everywhere) and their body cream is a great purchase too while you’re at it!

4. Foundation SPLURGE

I actually think this foundation is reasonably priced, since it does last me for a couple of months, but it’s definitely a higher-priced item in my beauty box. I have tried a number of foundations from Sephora and this is by far my favourite. It’s a higher-coverage foundation, but it’s never cakey, it lasts beautifully throughout the day and you don’t need much to cover your face. I apply it with the Beauty Blender Sponge (another splurge item I suppose!) and the coverage really is flawless.

5. Lip Gloss SPLURGE

My sister-in-law gave me a set of  lip glosses from Fresh last Christmas and I am hooked! (p.s. this trio set would make a great stocking stuffer!) It’s described on Sephora’s website as “A hydrating treatment that nourishes, protects, and plumps the lips“. I totally agree that it makes my lips incredibly soft, the colour is perfectly pigmented and I love that is has SPF. I actually didn’t know that they were supposed to plump the lips, and I haven’t really noticed that they do, but I’ll take that as a bonus! They are $26 each, but they do last a good amount of time so I think it’s worth the splurge!

6.  Facial Cleanser SPLURGE

This Purity Made Simple cleanser sets me back $52 for 24oz. so it’s not a huge splurge considering how much you get (and it lasts me 6 months) but I suppose compared to drug store cleansers, it would be considered pricey. This is another product I’ve been using for as long as I can remember.  It takes off every little bit of makeup on my face (including waterproof mascara!), it’s extremely gentle on my sensitive skin and I just found out it doubles as a cleaner for makeup brushes! Sephora sells a travel size version for $13, so I encourage you to give it a try and you’ll be buying the large bottle in no time!

Happy shopping!
